Reaction time
How quickly you react. Faster reaction times went with lower death rates.
How to do it
- Sit comfortably. On a computer, rest a finger on the space bar; on a phone, hold it steady.
- When the box turns green, tap it or press space as fast as you can.
- Wait for the change: tapping early doesn't count. Five tries make one result.

What the research found
In 54,019 UK Biobank adults followed for 5.8 years, each standard deviation faster on a reaction time test went with 8% lower risk of death, after allowing for fitness and other factors. Screens and devices add their own delay, so a result is best compared with your own earlier tries on the same device.
Studied in: 54,019 UK Biobank adults followed for about 6 years.
