How to do it

Stand next to a wall or the back of a sturdy chair so you can catch yourself, or have someone beside you.

  1. Stand on one leg and rest the front of your other foot against the back of your standing leg's calf.
  2. Keep your arms by your sides and look straight ahead.
  3. Start the timer and hold for 10 seconds without touching anything.
  4. You get three tries, on either foot.

What the research found

One in five people in the study couldn't hold the stance for 10 seconds. Over a median of 7 years, 17.5% of them died against 4.6% of those who could. After taking age, sex, weight and illnesses into account, people who couldn't do it had an 84% higher risk of death.

Studied in: 1,702 adults aged 51 to 75 at an exercise clinic in Brazil.
