About 3 minYour cholesterol, blood pressure and kidney function (eGFR or creatinine)

What you'll need

For adults 30 to 79 who haven't had a heart attack, stroke or heart failure. If you have, your risk is higher than this can show; ask your clinician.

  1. Find your latest total and HDL cholesterol and blood pressure.
  2. Find your eGFR, a kidney test on most blood reports. If you only have creatinine, enter that instead.
  3. Note whether you take blood pressure pills or a statin, have diabetes, or smoke.

What the research found

The American Heart Association released the PREVENT equations in 2023 to update the older pooled cohort equations. They were built and tested in 6.6 million adults and include kidney function, which the old ones left out. In testing on separate data, when comparing someone who went on to have heart disease with someone who didn't, they gave the first person the higher risk about 79% of the time for women and 76% for men.

Studied in: 6.6 million US adults in 46 data sets.
