How to do it

  1. Read each statement and tick the ones that are true for you.
  2. Think about the past year for falls and the past few weeks for everything else.
  3. If you're unsure about one, it's better to tick it.

What the research found

This is the CDC's Stay Independent checklist, from its STEADI falls program, based on a questionnaire built from the American and British Geriatrics Societies' list of fall risks. In 40 adults aged 65 and over, the questionnaire agreed closely with a full clinical falls assessment (kappa 0.875). It hasn't yet been tested on whether people who score high go on to fall more, which its authors named as the next step.

Studied in: 40 adults aged 65 and over at a Los Angeles veterans' clinic and an assisted living home.
